Tell us more about the Graphic-Con event

Graphic-Con is a Northern Ontario Fan Convention presented by The Greater Sudbury Public Library and Launchpad Marketing and sponsored by Sudbury Tourism, Downtown Sudbury, the City of Greater Sudbury, Journal Printing, Cambrian College, Q92 & KISS 105.3 and the Radisson Hotel and more. We feature local and outside comic book/graphic novel authors and artists, film professionals, cosplay and popular themes in pop culture.

Graphic-Con is a nonprofit fun and affordable Con for Northern Ontario. Graphic-Con is meant to encourage fan culture, literacy through graphic-novels and comic books and other pop-culture mediums. We created Graphic-Con to fill a void for Northern Ontario geeks, who normally have to drive hours to attend events like Fan Expo, typically at great cost for attendees and vendors alike. Our goal is to bring together fans of all ages and types into an affordable Con experience. Whether you appreciate comics, Star Trek, Star Wars, anime, Dr Who, Homestuck, zombies, gaming, steampunk, or something else – we’ve got something for you.

How was the event received in 2015, what led to the decision to relocate to the Sudbury Arena?

We always chuckle a bit when we get this question. Going into the 2015 event we expected 700 attendees as a high number. We were a tad off. We had a line up way before the doors open which lasted for a good portion of the day. Our total at the end of the day not counting those who did not wait in line was just over 2000 people who came out to Science North. It proved to us that there was demand for a fan convention in our community and the GSPL is very proud to have created it. We absolutely loved working with Science North and we can never replicate the feel of having a fan convention in a venue like the Sudbury Cavern but due to the popularity and turn out we realized we needed a lot more space the Sudbury Arena was just perfect place. This also lets us engage our Downtown businesses and lets us spread our wings a bite more with our programming.

What can we expect to see at the event?

Expect to see lots of people in awesome costumes come June 11th. We will have activities starting June 7th. We’ve partnered up with Sudbury Trivia Night where they will be doing a special Graphic-Con theme on Tuesday, June 7 at 8 PM to 11 PM. We also are partnering with some very talented people who have created a motion graphic novel called The Last of The Lost. The event takes place Thursday, June 9 at 7 PM at Overtime Sports Bar and Grill. Were also going to have events happening at Let’s Scrabbalatte, Science North and other locations. On June 11th Downtown Sudbury will be transformed into a mini Gotham City. We invite all of Northern Ontario to attend this one of a kind event. The Farmers Market and many local businesses downtown are joining in on the Graphic-Con fun. We will have free family programming happening at the Farmers Market from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Lots of fun things to do for everyone. Ticket holders will be able to meet our Special Guests, Vendors, Artists & Guest Cosplayers at The Sudbury Arena from 10 AM to 6 PM & ending the the event at the Arena with our first ever Cosplay Masquerade (Costume Contest). Events and programming will be happening all throughout the weekend. Scheduled events are available and are continuously updated online. For those coming to the event from out of town we encourage them to stay at the Radisson Hotel where we have a promo code for attendees. It’s going to be a huge blast for our community and Northern Ontario. We believe fan culture is huge in the North and that this event will grow bigger and bigger in the years to come.

When is the event and how can we get tickets?

We have satellite events and programming happening throughout the week. The main event takes place at The Sudbury Arena on Saturday June 11th, 2016 from 10 AM to 9 PM. Tickets are $5 and are available online, additional service fees apply if you purchase online. You can also buy tickets at the Sudbury Arena Box Office during operating hours. We encourage everyone to buy early to avoid the ticket line on June 11th.
