Gary Petingola and Sheila Damore-Petingola, owners of Mindfulness on the Rocks, are two Sudburians who are bringing mindfulness and meditation to the public through their Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction program. We spoke with them to find out more about their course (currently housed at ARC Climbing Yoga Fitness), as well as how to incorporate mindfulness into our daily lives! Can you tell us a little bit about your backgrounds and careers? When did you begin practicing mindfulness and meditation? We are Masters prepared Social Workers, obtaining our degrees at Laurentian University in Sudbury. Our work experience is primarily in......

Rebalancing Sudbury one patient at a time

ReBalance is Sudbury’s newest physiotherapy and chiropractic clinic that opened on the Kingsway. The team works collaboratively to provide effective care to all of their patients. We spoke with the owners to find out more. What is the story behind ReBalance Health Group? What was your motivation to open your own clinic?  Opening a clinic has been a goal for each of us since we graduated. The three of us met through work and developed a strong professional relationship, quickly realizing that we shared similar goals and visions for the future. This realization led to the creation of ReBalance. We......

DIY Dental Hygiene Products

Do it yourself (DIY) is all the rage these days, it is pretty much why Pinterest was invented.  From home decor to lip scrubs, you can pretty much find out how to make anything these days but have you ever considered tooth paste or mouth wash?  Years ago I started switching all my products to more natural solutions, and recently I try to make as many of my products as I can. Making your own products can be great because you know exactly what goes in them and there are no surprises. Another amazing benefit is that they are actually healthier......

The holidays are done, your time off is up, and it’s back to the grind. For some this is an exciting time; they’ve made their new year’s resolutions, their day planner is filled to the nines, and they’re ready to take on 2017. Well, good for them but let’s be real, that’s not how we all feel. When the lovely veil of holiday magic has been lifted and the nasty realm of reality comes into plain view many of us suffer from the New Year slump-basically this means that we feel a little unready, nervous or anxious, and all......

Why you shouldn’t consider potatoes vegetables.

It is not uncommon to sit down at a dinner table and the meal includes meat, grains and potatoes.  My question always is where are the vegetables?  The answer I always get is potatoes are a vegetable.  But are they? Here are some reasons why I would not consider potatoes a vegetable. When I think of vegetables I think of the nutrition factor they have, along with all the enzymes, which is why they should be eaten at every meal.  Potatoes contain vitamin C, vitamin B6, copper, potassium, manganese, tryptophan and fiber.  These are all great things and do......

Coconut oil: The Multi Purpose Oil

To me, a nutrition expert, coconut oil is old news, but apparently to some it is still new. You have probably already seen articles on coconut oil and all its uses, but for those of you who still wonder why its the latest trend, then this is for you. I was recently asked by a family friend, what the deal was on coconut oil. I explained to her how it is healthy to ingest but also good to use on many other things, which makes this purchase multi purposeful. Good Fat: There are good fats and bad fats in......

Vitamin D: The sunshine vitamin

Now that summer is at it’s peak,  we all can enjoy some time in the sun soaking up the rays. By rays I mean, Vitamin D.  Vitamin D is a vitamin that we can get without having to eat anything, we soak it up through our skin and it gets converted to Vitamin D. Why do we need Vitamin D? Vitamin D is important because it does several things to promote health in our bodies.  It is used to keep your bones and teeth strong  by helping with calcium absorption and regulation.   It also helps to prevent inflammation,......
