DOUGLAS BORNN PHOTOGRAPHS: AN EXPLORATION OF TRAIN CARS AND GRAFFITI

The Art Gallery of Sudbury has something new in store for Sudburians! Do you ever take a minute and admire the spray paint tags as the train-cars roll past? If so this show is for you! In this most recent exhibition by photographer Douglas Bornn we get a unique look into the relationships between train cars, graffiti, colours and lighting. Having stumbled onto the project by accident simply wanting to capture a passing piece of graffiti this simple photo took on a life of its own and inspired, Bornn to try to give a more detailed look at these passing works of art. Now that’s what we call a traveling show!  You can catch DOUGLAS BORNN PHOTOGRAPHS: An Exploration of Train Cars and Graffiti starting September 21^st and closing October 29^th. The Art Gallery of Sudbury is located at 251 John Street.  The Gallery is open Tuesday – Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 12 noon to 5 p.m.

“The subject of this recent series of photographs would appear to be train graffiti, and initially it was. It changed when I started looking and thinking about a particular photo I had taken and realized that there was more going on in this image than just a simple record of graffiti. I had moved in to take a closer view including little more than the elements of the painted image that I was interested in. Once at the computer I found that I had a photograph that integrated the graffiti and the train car allowing them to play one against the other.” Described Douglas Bornn.

Douglas Bornn has been an active member of the Sudbury arts community for many years. He began exhibiting his photography works in the early 1980’s across Northern Ontario and has been features in numerous collections at the Art Gallery of Sudbury. Initially trained as a black & white photographer he would develop, print and frame all his works by hand. In 2007, Bornn took the plunge into the digital realm with his first digital camera. The new medium and vibrancy of shooting with colour reignited his passion for the medium and hasn’t looked back since!
