Open Studio | Cambrian College presents Curious Couture: Fab Fashions & Personal Collections Feb 8–Mar 3, 2018 Gallery hours: Wed–Fri 11am–2pm, Sat 12–4 pm or by appointment (closed Thurs Feb 15) Admission is free but donations are welcome. *Sat Feb 17, 12–1pm: Richard Neufeld will discuss his collection of Bob Basset handmade masks. *Sat Feb 24, 12–1pm: Nadine Olivier will discuss her collection of Lolita fashion, a Japanese street fashion. Have you wondered what other people in your community collect? Many have personal collections: some are inherited; some have developed over the years beginning childhood; and others have just started their collections from seemingly nowhere. We’re giving you a glimpse into three people’s collections from Sudbury, Ontario: • Leesa Bringas (Cambrian’s Open Studio technician / Instructor in Design and Visual Arts) featuring a wide range of Betsey Johnson fashion (NYC designer) and ephemera from the 60s through the late 2000s; • Richard Neufeld (Instructor and Coordinator for Cambrian’s Art Foundations & Design and Visual Art programs and Cambrian alumni) featuring handcrafted masks by Bob Basset (Ukrainian Art Studio created by brothers Serhii and Oleg Petrov) + additional items; and • Nadine Olivier, alumna of Cambrian’s Public Relations program (graduate certificate) featuring Lolita fashion, a Japanese street fashion. Each personal collection intersects art, fashion, design and popular culture. Viewers will be treated to a visual display of their collections as well as information about the items, if and when they wear their collected items and overall why they collect. Curator/personal collector lead tours & discussions: Sat Feb 10, 12–1pm: Leesa Bringas will discuss her collection of Betsey Johnson fashion from the 60s through the late 2000s. Embark on a voyage that will transform your body, mind, and heart through Integrated Transformation 200-hour Vinyasa Yoga Teacher Training. Kicking off February 22nd, 2018 this 200-hour Teacher Training Program has been designed for students who want to become certified yoga teachers, as well as those with a desire to dive deeper into the art and science of yoga, grow in their practice, deepen in self-understanding and gain a greater knowledge of body alignment, anatomy and yoga philosophy. Participants will learn and develop the key elements necessary to teach a fun, safe and effective yoga class as well as important skills that will positively serve all aspects of one’s life. Integrated Transformation Yog...a Teacher Training Program offers an empowering approach to education, teaching and what it means to craft an experience that supports the students for success. For many years one of Canada's most admired singer-songwriters, and an accomplisherd playwright and adventurer to boot, Ian Tamblyn will be featured in the Motley Kitchen’s Dinner & A Show series on Thursday, February 22. Tamblyn's musical career goes back to 1972. Since then he has released 39 albums and CDs of his own work as well as acting as producer for dozens of other artists. Ian has also written 15 plays and over 100 theatre soundtracks.Tamblyn has received an impressive number of other honours, awards and nominations in artistic and other spheres of activity. He was made a fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographic Society for his guiding and creative work in the Canadian Arctic. His adventure travel hasalso taken him to Antarctica, South Georgia, the Falklands, Scotland , Iceland, and Greenland, ... all fodder for his music.He has been awarded the Estelle Klein and Helen Verger Awards for his contributions to Canadian folk music. He has a honourary doctorate from Lakehead University, a Distinguished Alumni Award from Trent University and was voted English Songwriter of the Year in 2010 by the Canadian Folk Music Awards. He was also a recipient of the Northern Lights Festival’s Jackie Washington Award for embodying the spirit of the festival. Ian will bring a kindred spirit to open his show at the Motley Kitchen. Northern wilderness adventurer, Kate Weekes captures the landscape of her travels in song. Life as a dog musher influenced her Yukon album ‘Frost on Black Fur’ (2014) and a body of new work composed during the winter of 2017 above the arctic circle on a Norwegian fjord.
