FROMAGERIE ELGIN: IT’S MORE THAN JUST CHEESE!

FROMAGERIE ELGIN: IT’S MORE THAN JUST CHEESE!

Wine and cheese – need I say more? This incredibly hip eatery is known for its great atmosphere and hosting abilities! Fromagerie Elgin is definitely a spot you will need to check out because let me tell you it is more than just cheese! Enjoy delicious eats accompanied by weekly local music, poetry readings, trivia fun, dance-a- thons and so much more! We spoke with the manager, Laura, to get the inside scoop at the Fromo.

Tell us about yourself and Fromagerie Elgin. Where did the inspiration to create a specialty cheese shop come from?

Fromagerie Elgin is owned and run by Jake Callingham. Believe it or not, this shop has been here for 9 years. Jake loves being a part of bringing culture and community together. Introducing cheeses that one cannot get anywhere else and providing a communal space where people can get together and enjoy food, local art, live entertainment, craft beers, wine and specialty cheeses is what we’re all about!

Tell us a bit more about what you offer in terms of the large variety of cheeses, meat and other specialty items within your menu.

We import cheese from all over the world. Cheeses that some people don’t even know exist! We offer locally sourced Pate and Terrines as well as cured meats like Serbian smoked ham and Schinkenspeck. As for our actual menu, we offer toasted sandwiches, soups made from fresh ingredients (vegan and vegetarian options) and, of course, cheese plates that include a variety of cheeses served with olives, meat and fresh baguette.

There’s always something happening on the Fromo calendar. You can catch concerts, trivia nights, art shows and even burlesque at the shop. Tell us a bit more about your entertainment options?

Every Tuesday evening at 8pm we have Sudbury Trivia Night where there are cool prizes to be won. Every Wednesday at 8:30pm, we host Hugh Jazz featuring Will Himsl on vocals. We also showcase different local visual artists and have their opening reception on the first Thursday of every month. Beyond that, we book out of town and local musical performers and host a variety of community events (poetry readings, book launches, press releases/conferences, etc.).

What makes you unique in Sudbury and how do you think you stand out compared to other local businesses?

We’re dedicated to contributing to cultural & artistic growth in the downtown community. Its been a pleasure being a neighbor and supporter of small businesses downtown. I think the thing that makes us stand out is the CHEESE, but other than that, we’re just a big family and don’t want to compete with other local restaurants or shops. We want all of Sudbury to flourish and do well!

Where is Fromagerie Elgin located and where else can we find information?

Isabelle Roy is an HK student at Laurentian University, fueled by coffee and sarcasm with an absurd love for Ben Howard. If she isn’t found belting out karaoke, you can assume she is drinking good wine with her dog. The only thing she loves more than chili cheese fries from Tucos is Miles Teller.
