Our Crater X Cambrian College Business Administration: Leah Legault

Numbers and math may be a real nightmare for some people, but for graduates of Cambrian College’s accounting program it’s their passion! We’ve had the chance to speak with some of the graduates from this program here in Sudbury, and they’ve given us an inside glance into their experience! First up is: Leah Legault.

School and Program: Cambrian College & Laurentian University (bridge program). Three years at Cambrian College – Business Administration – Accounting. Two full years at Laurentian – Commerce (major in accounting)

Current Location and Profession: Chartered Professional Accountant, Chartered Accountant (CPA, CA) at Freelandt Caldwell Reilly LLP

Do you have a favourite memory from Cambrian College?

I have so many. I can honestly say that I enjoyed all three years at Cambrian. One memory in particular was having the opportunity to participate in a tax clinic where we provided free personal tax services to other students. It may not sound exciting to everyone but Cambrian’s hands-on program enabled me to apply my knowledge and make a difference for people in the real world and it was really rewarding. I also met so many great people at Cambrian, other students and professors, with whom I am still very close with today.

What inspired you to choose your program and why should others consider this program at Cambrian College?

To be honest I was in my last month of high school and wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. I planned on taking an extra year of high school and changed my mind last minute and chose to take accounting based on my favourite subject. To others who might consider taking Cambrian’s accounting program: the program opens up so many opportunities for you. There’s a broad range of classes in the program that can help you decide on a career path. You can finish your education after College and obtain a job in the public accounting field or in industry or you can continue your education and take advantage of the articulation agreement between Cambrian College and Laurentian University to obtain both a degree and a diploma.

How did you decide that you wanted to be an accountant?

I have always liked numbers and problem solving. I knew I wanted to choose a program and career path that would challenge me and one that would always have jobs available, especially in Sudbury.

What has been the favourite part of your career so far?

I landed an amazing job with a public accounting firm that helped me through to get my CPA, CA designation. Obtaining my designation was one of the most mentally and physically challenging parts of my life, and also my biggest accomplishment so far. I am now one of the lead team members at our firm helping other student employees work towards their designation, which is something I really enjoy doing on top of my everyday file work.

Do you have any new advice for recent graduates or those who are just entering the program?

You will only get out what you put into your work in the program. Ask questions when you don’t understand and meet with your professors. The profs at Cambrian always have an open door and will be willing to help as long as you are willing to put the effort in. Also, keep in mind that your grades do matter. Many employers will request your transcript with your resume before inviting you to an interview. With that being said, it’s going to be a challenging program so seek help when you need it and try your very best!
