Tell us a bit about Yorkshire Creations.
Yorkshire Creations truly is a labour of love. It’s still in the growing process and I love seeing it flourish. It’s based on bringing peoples farmhouse sign ideas to life with my own little touch added. I also love to see people purchase my own creative designs.  My passion really began with helping my husband build our dining room table. I just had to be a part of it even if it meant that I got to do was apply what seemed like a million coats of polyurethane. I was hooked.

What is your creative process like?
I was taught to have a target customer. To create pieces geared towards a certain niche of customers. Although that is very important, I also want my customers to get a sense of who I am as the owner and creator behind Yorkshire Creations. I have a deep passion for wildlife and nature so naturally, I want to show that in my work. Early on I decided to make myself my target customer, after all if, my pieces don’t sell, they end up on my walls. So the process goes like this: an idea pops into my brain, I write it down and I’m typically entirely too excited about it to wait so I get started on it right away. I purchase the appropriate materials, create the shapes and/or stencils and then from there I choose stain and paint colour. The most fun part is choosing patterned backgrounds for my cut outs.

What kinds of signs and home decor pieces can we find in your shop?
You can find large statement pieces with fonts. Bold patterns with nature themed shapes and I love holidays so there is usually something special for any given occasion. You can also find select pieces at the Outpost General Store in Little Current, ON.
What type of workshops do you teach? Do you have any upcoming workshops?
Yorkshire Creations offers wood sign paint events which are a huge hit within Sudbury and surrounding areas. I offer a large selection of designs, I travel to the clients home or office and once a month I open up my home to those who don’t want to host a party but still want to learn how to create their own signs. I cover everything from what type of wood I use to money saving tips if you choose to start creating your own signs.
I currently have no set dates for events but keep your eyes peeled for the coming months.
Do you do custom orders? What has been one of your favourites so far?
YES! I love when someone chooses Yorkshire Creations to bring their creation to life. What better compliment than to have someone pick my small business to be a part of their home or gift giving.
Hands down my favourite custom piece to date was a mother’s day gift. It was a large 24” x 36” sign with specific lyrics from Jan Arden’s “Good Mother”. It touched me right in the feels and I was so flattered to be a part of such a special piece.
Do you have any tips for other makers who may be looking to start selling their own pieces of art?
DON’T GIVE UP! Stay true to what you want to create and not what you think people will buy. Remember that you offer something special than no one else does. It can’t be about the money. Keep your priorities in check and you’ll be as successful as you let yourself be.
