Sudbury Wolves Recap: Wolves turn in winning week!
The Sudbury Wolves have had an incredible week of hockey. In a rare spot in the season, three home games took place in the Sudbury Community Arena starting on the 11th, wrapping up on the 15th.
The Wolves faced off with three very tough teams to start 2017 at home, starting with the Soo Greyhounds, followed by the North Bay Battalion and closing with a matchup with the Mississauga Steelheads.
Following these three games, they sit at sixth in the Eastern Conference and 14th overall, with a record of 19-19 and 43 points keeping the dream of a post-season appearance alive!
The first matchup of the week, against the Soo Greyhounds was a sign of things to come, with a lot of intensity on the ice. A trend that would stick with them throughout the following games. The Wolves fought tooth and nail against the Soo with a high scoring result on both sides, which of course led to the overtime result. Highlights include goals by Wolves #98 Dimitri Sokolov, #16 Ryan Valentini, #13 Michael Pezzetta. Unfortunately the action was not one sided and the Soo had a tremendous game, firing off four straight after the initial Sokolov play. Goals from the Soo were dealt by However the Wolves would rally back to force the tie breaking overtime. Although the game ended with a loss of 5-4, the Pack played an incredible game against the always tough Greyhounds.
The North Bay Battalion came to town on Friday to tangle with the Wolves after the grueling overtime loss, it looks to have lit a fire under them. This game followed the trend and did not disappoint in the action, with a few dustups and high impact collisions between players. Wolves #16 Ryan Valentini put the wolves on the board early, followed by team Captain #23 Kyle Capobianco. Sandwiched in between another Valentini goal was a North Bay goal. After Valentini’s second of the game, the Battalion would answer back but it wouldn’t matter as the Pack took the game with a score of 3-2!
The rivalry with the Steelheads reached a fever pitch in this game! Riding high off the two game stretch of tough and close challenges, the Wolves would not be denied, either on the scoreboard or in fisticuffs. This game started off with a power play goal by Wolves #37 Zach Wilkie, but the tide quickly turned to Mississauga who rattled off three straight goals in the second period. The Wolves however would not go quietly and answered back towards the end of the period by Sokolov and again in the third by #11 Alan Lyszczarczyk forcing overtime. After a frustrating overtime, the stars aligned in the shootout for Lyszczarczyk scoring the game winner.
