Ladies track and field star Katie Wismer of the Laurentian Voyageurs has a fast-paced life; keeping up with the competitors and school work at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) can be a challenge, but she takes it in stride (pun intended). A fifth year student at Laurentian and freshman at NOSM, Katie competes with some of the fastest girls in the varsity division.

Laurentian’s ladies track team has been a staple for their Varsity program, and the men’s team is on its way back into the fold, but as of late the local media has definitely noticed this success. Laurentian often races with top schools such as McMaster, Western University, and the University of Toronto. “I think it’s really great for the team, especially our coaches, as they put a lot of time and effort into this,” says Katie, “Sometimes it doesn’t go as noticed as it should. Our cross country team finished 10th in Canada which is pretty outstanding considering the size of our school!”

You must be wondering, what motivates someone to excel and compete in such a demanding sport such as running track? Katie attributes her motivation to being surrounded by a team of like-minded ladies and driven coaches, as well as going to meets and events and seeing others training rigorously, “Just being able to be in this rewarding sport, getting faster, and even having this fifth year in the program is an awesome experience.”

After graduating from her undergraduate program, Katie was accepted at NOSM, Laurentian’s medical school. Although she says that it has been challenging as a first year med student and varsity athlete, she admits that it is an incredible opportunity to be able to pursue a prestigious career and education as well as being able to race at the highest university level. “It’s nice to have those two, something to balance off the schooling, something to balance off the running. I’m very passionate about what I’m learning which always helps.”

Katie also has a message for those who support her through her athletic journey: “I really want to thank my coaches and family for supporting me; it hasn’t been a linear progression, and having had all of my friends and family and coaches there has been absolutely amazing. I just hope that girls and boys who are passionate about running know that Laurentian is great option for them to pursue and consider!”
