Weekend Roundup: August 12-14

Weekend Roundup: August 12-14

Friday, August 12

David Dino White / UP HERE – This North Bay native uses his well-honed guitar abilities to go on a genre-hopping adventure from indie to folk to metal to flamenco and back, never looking even a little tired along the way. White is a pioneer of style, recruiting tons of talent, like Juno-nominated producer Ben Leggett, to contribute to his always changing/always daring project. 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. @ Fromagerie Elgin – 5 Cedar Street

Benjamin Hermann / UP HERE – Benjamin doesn’t need an accompaniment to his sweet, effortless sounding vocals, but the subtle guitar is a perfect balance. The Toronto-based musician’s journey found him living in Whitehorse, YT for a time, and traveling as far as Germany and Russia. The bearded Thunder-Bay-born folk musician has picked up notes and colours as he’s followed his nomadic heart, telling a story with every song. Listen close. 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. @ Speakeasy – 113 Durham Street

Thesis Sahib / UP HERE – Under the moniker Thesis Sahib, muralist James Kirkpatrick throws down hip-hop rhymes over the weird sounds of circuit-bent toys, Game Boys, and electronic garbage he finds on the street. The result is a highly colourful performance married to a cacophony of fun and familiar sounds. His performance at Up Here will act as a vernissage of his newly created mural. 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. @ Kuppajo Espresso Bar – 109 Larch Street

5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. @ Little Montreal – 182 Elgin Street

Old Cabin / UP HERE – Folk music without pretension. Jona Barr aims to capture the timeless Northern atmosphere through soulful and sincere pared down ambience. Every note takes its time, each one a slow burning scene in Barr’s weathered storytelling. Old Cabin is like a scorching day lost in the countryside, the kind where you’re not quite sure if you want to get back. 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. @ The HourGlass Restaurant & Lounge – 183 Cedar Street

Night Terrors / UP HERE – What started as a series of recurring nightmares have crept into the real world, forming an entirely new kind of musical project courtesy of Matthew Beech and David MacKinnon. Created within the womb of tape machines and inspired by backwards guitars and dial tones, Night Terrors is supernatural rock that acts as the missing link between the analog and digital ages. 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. @ Durham Mess Hall – 80 Durham Street

Stars w/ Paupière + Iskwé / UP HERE – This is going to be one hell of an awesome street party with the first ever Sudbury performance of indie-pop group Stars.
