Bel Canto Chorus Celebrates 40 Years

The Bel Canto Chorus is celebrating its 40th season and will be hosting a black-tie evening of music this Friday, February 26th at the Holiday Inn on Regent Street. Funds from the gala will help support the Bel Canto Chorus share their music through free mini concerts at seniors’ residences and other pro bono engagements, as well as sponsoring music awards and bursaries.

The Bel Canto Chorus is in their 40th season – what have been some highlights from the past 40 years?

Bel Canto has roots that go back over forty years to the Sudbury Philharmonic Society. In the mid 1970’s, this group split into the Sudbury Symphony and Bel Canto. Ours is a non-profit organization which provides a welcoming venue for people who love to sing together. Our membership, usually around 50 to 70 in number, consists of people from all walks of life, students to retirees, and from all over Greater Sudbury, including Whitefish, Capreol, Dowling, Onaping, Skead, Copper Cliff, Hanmer.

Any upcoming performances?

We offer four public performances annually – two in December and two in May; we perform a wide variety of musical styles, including sacred, classical, modern, folk, Broadway, in order to appeal to a cross-section of the community. At our concerts, we often feature guests such as Sudbury Secondary Choirs, Cambrian Youth Orchestra, Kampana Handbells, and we have been able to provide opportunities for talented local voice students to be spotlighted.  As well, we have performed with the Sudbury Symphony and as guests at local high school concerts.  A few years ago, we were invited to sing Handel’s Messiah in the Lincoln Centre in New York City.  In 2010, we sang at the Olympic torch ceremony and will reprise that piece at our 2016 spring concert.Members of Bel Canto will be performing at the Gala on February 26.  The spring concert is on May 5th and 6th at St. Andrew’s – 111 Larch St., at 7:30 p.m.

What can we expect to see at the Gala on February 26th?

At the Gala, there will be a number of live performances, including a piece from the Barber of Seville.  Dr. Hoi Cheu’s latest documentary, Pleasing Note Do Sing: The Bel Canto Chorus, is 30 minutes long and will be projected in parts throughout the meal.

Fund raised will assist in regular outreach in our community, what are some examples of outreach initiatives the Bel Canto Chorus participates in?

Bel Canto Chorus gives back to the community in various ways.  We raised $2000 this past Christmas for the Salvation Army’s Christmas Food Baskets.  Each year we fund an award for vocal performance at the Sudbury Kiwanis Festival.  As well, we perform at nursing homes and the hospital regularly, sharing the joy of music.
