Did you know that Sudbury’s own Jordan Kilganon, international basketball dunker, was named after famous basketball player Michael Jordan? Or that he has travelled all over the world performing his dunks? A quick Google search will lead to videos of his extreme dunks, some with hundreds of thousands of views! Find out more about him, his talents, and what he has planned for the year ahead in our one-on-one interview!

First off Jordan, I have to ask; what first inspired you to start dunking? I’m assuming you played basketball originally?

I’ve actually played basketball my whole life. My dad even named me after Michael Jordan! I was definitely a basketball freak, and I grew up being named after a guy who was known for his incredible dunks. There are even videos of me when I was a toddler dunking. I’ve always been fascinated with the whole concept.

Your highlights and hoop tapes are all over the Internet and TV, and have even gone viral. How does it feel to know that people around the world have seen your incredible talent?

You know, it’s pretty amazing. I never thought it would be this big. I knew I would probably get to a point where I was pretty good but the dream was always to be the best in the world. I feel like it still hasn’t really hit me that much; I try not to think about it that way. As far as social media, the views are awesome but only because they help me inspire others to do whatever it is that they love. All I want to do is dunk.

Where has being an international dunker taken you? What countries and places have you been able to visit?

I’ve been to over 20 countries so far, and I’ve even gone back to a few of them; countries like Qatar, Indonesia, China, Italy, Morocco, all over Europe, and of course, the United States. And, it’s all been within the last half of 2015.

So, I understand you offer a program to show others how to perform dunks like yours? Can you tell me more about Bouncekit?

Bouncekit is a response to people asking me throughout my entire life about what I do; you know, how to jump higher, and over the years, I’ve spent a crazy amount of time learning about the most efficient ways to do so. I’ve talked to Olympic high jumpers and their coaches and I feel like I’ve got it down pat.

Bouncekit is a three-month training program, with different phases. The first is a strength phase, followed by a speed phase. It teaches you how to use all of it into one explosive movement; it’s all my life’s research put into one program. Currently, it is sold out, but if you head over to bouncekit.com and sign up, I will send you FREE tips, every single week, and when we launch our next program we will keep you up to date! Find out more about Bouncekit here.

Have you had a chance to meet some of the superstars of the basketball world in your travels? And furthermore, do you have a hero or inspiration for what you do?

I actually met Scottie Pippen, and it surprisingly had nothing to do with basketball. I met in him on the subway randomly! I’ve met the players from the Toronto Raptors, too. But in terms of role models, I tend to look up more to people from the past, it might sound silly, but philosophers like Socrates, for example. I look at how they lived their lives and why they did what they did.

Where do you see yourself in the next year?

My plan is to make my 2016 twice as big as 2015, there are a lot of big dunks I’m working on! I’ve been training so much that I’ve turned down shows to really focus on that. What I care about most is inventing new dunks, and I need that time to hit them properly. I expect to bring out higher magnitude dunks for sure! I’m also sponsored by K1X. They are a German company that makes basketball shoes and all kinds of street ball gear, and when I went to school for industrial design, I focused specifically on shoes. It’s always been my thing. Luckily for me they offered me a design internship and hopefully at some point I can help them design new shoes!

  2. Bounce Kit is not a program to go for. I would use Vert shock or the Jump Manual.
