Brightly Shining: Art Exhibit at the Art Gallery of Sudbury

Jocko Chartrand: Brightly shining

Sudbury visual artist Jocko Chartrand opened a new exhibit at the Art Galler of Sudbury titled Brightly shining. Back in 1976, Jocko opened his first solo show at Rothman’s Gallerey here in Sudbury and since 1973 he has been exhibiting his work since 1973 in Toronto and Sudbury.

Jocko Chartrand studied fine arts here in Sudbury at Cambrian College with a focus in painting and engraving. His exhibition history includes shows with La Slague, la Galerie du Nouvel-Ontario, the Fringe Festival, and the Laurentian University Museum and Art Center (now the Art Gallery of Sudbury). He was also part of The Cedar Collective, a collective of Sudbury artists including Heather Topp and Ron Langin.

You can now see his newest exhibit, Brightly Shining at the Art Gallery of Sudbury until September 1 and admission is by donation. This is an expansive collection of paintings and drawings from 1969 to 2017 that focus on his use of light and colour.

“The exhibition took three years to bring together. The artist is a very private person. Despite the intrusion of working with the Gallery, he was very generous with access to his archives. This exhibition was selected down from hundreds of works,” says Demetra Christakos, Director|Curator.

The Art Gallery of Sudbury is located at 251 John Street.  The Gallery is open Tuesday – Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm, and Sunday from noon to 5 pm.  For more information, visit www.artsudbury.org, or call 705-675-4871.
