BUT HOW BIG IS IT?!?!

BUT HOW BIG IS IT?!?!

You must have heard the news by now that Up Here will be taking on its most ambitious mural project yet this summer! The team will be covering the exterior of the old St. Joseph’s hospital on Paris st. This neglected eyesore will very soon be turned into an epic piece of art right on the shores of Ramsey Lake!!! Renowned American street and graffiti artist RISK will use the 80,000 square foot building as his very own canvas. His work is known for the use of bright and bold colours and unique letterforms. Over his 30 year career, he has been a main player in the evolution of graffiti as an art form worldwide. We absolutely cannot wait to see the transformation!

Ever since the announcement, we can’t stop thinking about the sheer size of this mural. EIGHTY THOUSAND SQUARE FEET! The mural at St. Joe’s hospital will be the largest in Canada – four times larger than the current record holder. This got us curious… how else can we look at 80,000 square feet…

A quick Google search (because we’re real scientists over here) told us that a standard football field is about 57,600 square feet. When we compare that to the 80,000 canvas we’re working with at St. Joe’s that’s 1.38 football fields.

The Big Nickel has a 30ft diameter. If we convert that to surface area that is 706.85 ft. St Joe’s is the size of 113.17 Big Nickels.

Our Sudbury arena home rink is 200×85 which converts to a surface area of 34,000 square feet. We’re talking the size of 2.3 skating rinks.

THAT’S A LOT OF SPACE TO COVER!!!!

So how much paint is this project going to take??? We went to our always accurate friend google once again. We find that a standard gallon of paint should cover approximately 400 square feet. When we convert that we would need 200 gallons of paint to cover all 80,000 square feet of St. Joe’s. AND THAT’S JUST ONE COAT! RISK and the Up Here crew have sure got their work cut out for them! We can’t wait to see work begin and check out the final product over the festival!

Year five of Up Here is set to be another one for the books with headlining acts for the multi-venue fest including Snotty Nose Rez Kids, ESG and Milk & Bone. The fan favourite geodesic dome (and pop-up bar) will be back in full force for Up Here 5, August 16-18. The festival crew will be creating a downtown playground, with DJ and musical performances so you can dance your heart out on Durham all weekend long! All Durham st activities will be free to the public to take in the energy and discover downtown in a new light. Passports are available now at www.uphere.com for $110 as well as individual show tickets ranging $10-30. Act fast to get in on the fun!
