Northern Lights Festival Boréal for many die hard Sudburians is the official start of summer, a weekend dedicated to soaking up the sun, music and fun at the fest. This is especially true for this weeks guest, Max Merrifield, Executive and Artistic Director of NLFB. Founded in 1972 by a collective of thoughtful citizens NLFB now holds the proud title of Canada’s longest running outdoor music festival, starting first as a free one day folk festival at Bell Park. Max’s father Scott Merrifield was one of the such founding organizers of the festival. While most of us have memories of our parents telling tales of neighbourhood shenanigans or what the neighbours are up to, conversation around the Merrifield dinner table featured memories of beloved performers over the years, music education or plans for next years fest. Now 47 years later lots of things have changed but the organization seems to have stayed within the family with Max now leading the way. This years edition of the festival runs July 5th-8th at Bell Park adding a Thursday night to the festival for the second year in a row. Festival headliners include the Arkells, Lisa LeBlanc, Alvvays and Bill & Joel Plaskett, but as any good fest fan knows the hidden gems are where its at. Max was kind enough to sit with us to talk about NLFB 2018, acts you should check out, and growing up Northern Lights. Listen in to this weeks episode here and check out our Spotify playlist here.
