The City Still Breathing by Matthew Heiti

May 3, 2018 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Project Bookmark Canada is pleased to announce a Bookmark for Sudbury, ON for a contemporary novel, The City Still Breathing, by Matthew Heiti, published by Coach House Books in 2013. Everyone is warmly invited to the free event celebrating Sudbury’s literature and writers at the official launch of the plaque monument on Thursday, May 3, 4 – 5 p.m., Townehouse Tavern, 206 Elgin Road, Sudbury.

“Heiti, a playwright and Genie-nominated screenwriter, tells the story from the alternating points of view of each of these characters over the course of a single day…. The City Still Breathing is set firmly in the early ’80s, with cues that range from a Men Without Hats poster to references to the Donahue show…. In the shadow of the Big Nickel, the city’s inhabitants are presented as survivors, still breathing against a backdrop of slag heaps, hopelessness and boredom…. Heiti’s Sudbury is a dark place, his characters caught between the desire to stay and the urge to flee.” – Shawn Syms (http://nationalpost.com/entertainment/books/book-reviews/book-review-the-city-still-breathing-by-matthew-heiti)

“Matthew Heiti is a writer and theatre creator living it rough in Northern Ontario. His fiction has been published in many journals and anthologies. He is a past winner of Grain Magazine’s prize for short fiction, a CBC “Writer to Watch” and the winner of the 2016 Carter V. Cooper Award for Best Emerging Writer. His novel The City Still Breathing is published by Coach House Books, 2013. A proud advocate for developing voices in neglected landscapes, he writes at harkback.org and explores new work in strange places at www.crestfallentheatre.com.” — Wordstock 2016
