SUDBURY STORYTELLERS WITH GSPL: DAVE WICKENDEN

This feature highlights local writers to bring their work to a broader audience. The Greater Sudbury Public Library comes across some of these writers on a regular basis and we are continuously introduced to new writers and new books to add to our shelves. Are you a local writer? Let us know and we can feature you in an upcoming month, shoot us an email at jessica.watts@greatersudbury.ca!

Who are you and how long have you been writing?

Born and raised in Sudbury, I retired in 2014 as Deputy Fire Chief of Greater Sudbury Fire Services to write full time. I am the father of three boys and the grandfather of three more boys. I have published two thriller novels through Crave Press and am working on my fourth novel. I have also published a short story, Burning Love in the anthology, Flicker through Filles Vertes Publishing and have another story dealing with a train wreck near Capreol in the 1930s poised to be published by Toronto Prose Mills, titled 300 Souls on the Line.

What are your books called and where can people get them?

My novels, In Defence of Innocence and Homegrown can be purchased through Amazon, Kobo, Chapters, Coles, Crave Press, and Bays Used Books. They are on order at the Greater Sudbury Public Library and people can also order one directly from the author for a signed copy at wickendendave@gmail.com.

How would you describe one of your books?

In Defence of Innocence deals with a vigilante that is hunting child abusers in Canada and the police officer that is tasked with capturing the killer. The issues in the story are all Canadian and there is even a murder scene set in Sudbury. In Homegrown, a troubled teen finds peace in Islam after the death of his father, when he comes to the attention of ISIS recruiters. His mother must trust a young Muslim girl to help her save her son before the unthinkable happens.

Where can people find you online?

Jessica Watts is the Coordinator of Outreach, Programs and Partnerships at the Greater Sudbury Public Library. Her job usually involves the parts of the public library that people don't associate with libraries like snowshoes, theatre passes and special events. She loves talking about books, especially over a caramel latte at Salute, and is always in the middle of reading 2 or 3 books at a time.. or, more honestly, 4 or 5!
