SUDBURY STORYTELLERS WITH GSPL: LAURA YOUNG

This feature highlights local writers to bring their work to a broader audience. The Greater Sudbury Public Library comes across some of these writers on a regular basis and we are continuously introduced to new writers and new books to add to our shelves. Are you a local writer? Let us know and we can feature you in an upcoming month, shoot us an email at jessica.watts@greatersudbury.ca!

Who are you and how long have you been writing?

I wonder sometimes if we have always been something and we just find our way to it. I am a writer, reader, swimmer, parent. I don’t remember learning how to swim, write or read – it’s just always been that way. The parenting remains a work in progress, growing along with my children. On a practical level I am a journalist and lifeguard-swimming instructor. I teach part-time in the public relations program at Cambrian College. A member of a Navy family, I was born in Halifax, N.S. I have lived in Sudbury since 1988.

What are your books called and where can people get them?

Lucky me – I have two books published: Solo Yet Never Alone Swimming the Great Lakes (2014). Soulmates on Ice: From Hometown Glory to the Top of the Podium is to be published this Fall.  These amazing books are available through myself, at Latitude 46 Publishing and online at Amazon and Chapters/Indigo. But please support your local author and book publisher first!

How would you describe one of your books?

Soulmates on Ice is the story of how Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford went from early skating lessons in small Northern Ontario towns to the top of the world, with a complete set of Olympic medals and two world championship titles in pairs skating. How did they do it – when there were so many obstacles to overcome? Why did they bother?

Where can people find you online?

I’m on Twitter, Facebook, on my website at lauraeyoung.ca and in The Sudbury Star every other Tuesday.

Jessica Watts is the Coordinator of Outreach, Programs and Partnerships at the Greater Sudbury Public Library. Her job usually involves the parts of the public library that people don't associate with libraries like snowshoes, theatre passes and special events. She loves talking about books, especially over a caramel latte at Salute, and is always in the middle of reading 2 or 3 books at a time.. or, more honestly, 4 or 5!
