UP HERE 7 LAUNCHES NEW MURALS FOR 2021

Get ready for Up Here 2021! The crew is back in action ready to create new art for Sudburians to enjoy after being grounded in 2020. Clear your schedules the weekend of August 20-22nd for Up Here 7! Spend a weekend reconnecting with our community and discovering beautiful new pieces of art! Durham St will transform into a lush and grassy Durham square all weekend long with free DJs, live music, and art installations to check out. The muralists are arriving and starting work on their walls so keep your eyes peel to see some art in action.

Along with muralists, there will be new editions of the Power Up Project from Amanda Durkin (Amandatomical Art), Danielle Provencher, Derek Longe, Gaurav Saini, Jessica Joly, and Mélanie Gagné. There will also be art installations from Casey Watson, Oragami Explorateur, Solaris, and Studio Nude Beach. That’s not even to mention their lineup of live music. In short, you’re not going to want to miss this!

Alex Berens – Sudbury, ON

A graphic designer, illustrator, tattoo artist, and small-time nature documentarian. You’ll know her work from Lost Lantern Tattoo Studio or her first go at a mural back in the Up Fest days on the side of Old Rock Roastery. Her style is all about the details as she recreates the flora & fauna found in Northern Ontario. Follow Alex on Instagram for some great nature content and facts on the regular.

Dr. Tammy GaberSudbury via Cairo via Waterloo

Dr. Tammy Gaber is an associate professor at the McEwan School of Architecture at Laurentian University, teaching Architectural Design Studio and Sacred Places. Dr. Gaber’s research has taken her to Waterloo and Cairo, Egypt to teach at the British University in Egypt and the American University of Cairo. Her expertise is in the intersections of design, sacred space, and cosmic order. You can see her previous work as part of the Power Up Project 2019 in front of Wembley public school.

DRPN Soul – Ottawa, ON

An exciting collaboration with Black Lives Matter Sudbury! Kalkidan Assefa, is known as “DRPN Soul,”, they are an Ethiopian-born visual artist from the unceded Algonquin Anishnaabeg territory known as Ottawa. Their striking large-scale murals celebrate Black figures, Black representation, visibility, cultural memory, and ancestral knowledge.

Kevin LedoMontréal, QC

Raised in Montreal with roots in the Azores Islands, Ledo’s art has led him around the world and back. His pieces have included large-scale murals, street art, fine art, and installations. He is continually inspired by the human mind, psychology and neuroscience, religious iconography, and music, his style is a blend of classical techniques and contemporary perspectives. He tries to capture the essence of every community he visits in his work, we can’t wait to see what he comes up with!

Lauren VerwolfSudbury, Ontario

A woman on a mission to change the world! Verwolf is part social worker, part designer and brings the two together to create pieces of art that visualize how we feel. She is passionate about community organization and is a strong believer that there is “a little art in every heart.” You can find her previous work for Power Up Project 2020 located at Centennial Drive and Paris St.

Sarah DempseySudbury, Ontario

Dempsey is a local Sudbury creator whose previous work in the Power Up Project you can find on Elgin St. Her style combines elements of traditional mediums like cross-stitching then upgraded by her modern graphic design eye. Her work ranges from realism, colour block illustration to old-school flash tattoo styles.

Jessica Lovelace is a Public Relations and Communications grad, musical theatre enthusiast, lover of live music and part-time unicorn tamer. Some have said that the Big Dripper from Sub City is a regional delicacy and the perfect end to a Sudbury Saturday Night – Jessica is definitely one of those people. No, the hair is not a perm.
