WORDSTOCK SUDBURY HAS ARRIVED!

WORDSTOCK SUDBURY HAS ARRIVED!

The Wordstock Sudbury Literary Festival is just around the corner! What does this mean? Readers, writers, and lovers of words can get ready for a jam-packed weekend of literary programming at Northern Ontario’s premier festival. The fun starts Friday, November 1st and runs until Sunday, November 3rd at the Holiday Inn in the South End. While there are many author talks, writing workshops and presentations taking place (full schedule is attached) here is a highlight of what I’m looking forward to the most.

Women with Word – Friday, November 1st @ 7PM

The Women with Word session on Friday, November 1st starts at 7 PM and brings Doyali Islam and Maude Veilleux together along with moderator Daniel Aubin. Islam (author of heft) and Veilleux (author of Prague) are two female voices making a splash in Ontario and Quebec right now. Join them for a conversation on the role that writing has in their lives and how their experiences inform their intimate and vulnerable writing.

Little Readers – Saturday, November 2nd @ 10:30AM

The Greater Sudbury Public Library (GSPL) is partnering with Wordstock to present a session for families and children called Little Readers on Saturday, November 2nd at 10:30 AM. This fun, free event will feature authors Kyo Maclear (author works) and Rosanna Battigelli (author works). Bring your little readers to the festival and let them engage with these children’s authors through story time, craft activities and by checking out the GSPL’s Pop-Up Library.

Minwaajimo: Tell a Good Story – Saturday, November 2nd @7PM

Featuring Michael Hutchinson (author of The Case of Windy Lake) and Ryan MacMahon. Indigenous stories are more than weaving an entertaining tale for an audience. There is a need for rewriting history, sharing an Indigenous perspective on Indigenous lives and keeping these stories circulating. Find out from two determined Indigenous creative forces about the importance of their storytelling.

In Conversation with Kyo Maclear and Linda Kenyon – Sunday, November 3rd @11AM

The final session of the Festival will also be one to put on your radar. Sit in on a conversation with these two talented authors, who are part of a growing trend of women writing their own history. Discover their fascinating experiences involving difficult life transitions and what they learned from those challenging times. Maclear’s memoir Birds Art Life and Kenyon’s Sea Over Bow are unique reads to consider adding to your to-read booklist.

Jessica Watts is the Coordinator of Outreach, Programs and Partnerships at the Greater Sudbury Public Library. Her job usually involves the parts of the public library that people don't associate with libraries like snowshoes, theatre passes and special events. She loves talking about books, especially over a caramel latte at Salute, and is always in the middle of reading 2 or 3 books at a time.. or, more honestly, 4 or 5!
