I'll take Trivia Night at the Fromagerie, Alex!
If you haven’t heard the news us Canadians are no longer allowed to compete on Jeopardy. This unfortunate news comes as a shock as the show is hosted by Sudbury native Alex Trebek, and really how much more Canadian can you get than being born in a Northern Ontario mining town? Never fear Trivia Night is here to satisfy all your high-stakes trivia needs! Every Tuesday night you can get your Trivia on at the Fromagerie. For $5 you get to play three rounds of trivia and win some awesome prizes! We spoke with the awesome organizers to get all the details.
Where did you get the idea to start Sudbury Trivia Night?

We started Trivia Night because we wanted something to do during the week that wouldn’t require drinking, but if some of the crew wanted a few that would be fine too. Something that wouldn’t keep us out all night but would keep us entertained for a few hours every week!

We saw the success of trivia nights in other cities and thought why not us, especially with our student population and because we, ourselves, were getting a bit older and a bit over the typical bar scene. We paired with the Fromagerie because we liked their vibe.

What is trivia night?

Three rounds of 15 questions asked by Adric Cluff and Shawn McLaren, sometimes mediated by Madison Helpert. It’s a fun mix of History, Geography, Arts & Entertainment, Science and General Knowledge. We add themed bonus questions to the end of each round and hook our fans up with some awesome prizes every week.

The last week of every month we are doing a full themed trivia night, we started with The Oscars last month, Star Trek this month and Harry Potter in April. We are working on a suggestion based night every month so check our Facebook and vote for what you want to see!

How has the response been so far?

We started as a bi-weekly event with the intention of taking summers off. We have since moved to weekly with no hiatus on the horizon. We’ve grown and maintained a consistent following that we are really proud of and excited about. We get about 8 teams a week, a lot of repeat offenders and some newbies each time. I hope everyone comes out at least once and checks it out, there are some great prizes to be won and super fun times to be had.

Every week has a theme, how do you choose your themes?

We mix it up with what people ask for vs. what’s relevant, basically anything with a fan base! We’re always looking for suggestions we want to give the people what they want – so if you have a good theme suggestion feel free to get in touch via Facebook. This week the theme is Star Trek, next week we’re doing Rocks and Metals.

Don’t be intimidated by our themes! We do themes for just the bonus questions every week and the last week of the month we are doing a full themed night. Trivia is three rounds of 15 questions so if you’re not familiar with the theme that week you can still come out and have a great time while showing off your random knowledge.

What has been the most popular theme so far?

Hands down Simpsons Trivia Night, we had to turn people away at the door. Our Oscars night was really popular we had to change questions mid-game because they weren’t challenging enough and our teams were scoring way above what we anticipated. However, we get a great response with our standard weekly Trivia, We emphasize an equal mix of history, geography, sports, arts & entertainment, science and general knowledge. We have great feedback on all questions that are not geography-census based.
