Who Will We See On National Canadian Film Day: Atom or Ryan?

Who Will We See On National Canadian Film Day: Atom or Ryan?

Earlier this month, Sudbury Indie Cinema Co-op announced it’s hosting National Canadian Film Day on Wednesday, April 20th- a countrywide celebration of Canadian movies. Last year, with its crushing grassroots support, when Indie Cinema stepped into the local planning team, Sudbury’s CanFilmDay audience numbers shot us into the top 3% of all screenings across Canada.

“We were quite shocked to learn months later from the head-honchos in Toronto that Sudbury had pulled one of the largest crowds in the country,” says Beth Mairs. Indie Cinema’s Project Manager. “ The folks at Reel Canada determined to help us this year by finding a Canadian film celebrity to attach to the Sudbury screenings.”

Who that celebrity actually is has become the subject of speculation of this year’s National Film Day celebrations. Last weekend, an article in the Sudbury Star suggested heartthrob Ryan Reynolds – the lead actor in THE CAPTIVE, which was partly shot in and around Sudbury – would be flying in. By Monday, KISS FM declared the participation of the A-list movie star hunk to its followers: the Internet exploded.

“I’m gonna blow off work and drive around downtown all day,” stated Sherrie-Dawn from Capreol.

However, on Sudbury Indie Cinema’s Facebook page and event, suggestions have been made that Ryan Reynolds will only appear on the big screen – and his whereabouts on Wednesday, April 20th are unknown.

There is momentum also gaining that the Canadian film celebrity who might have a presence this coming Wednesday, April 20 at the Sudbury Theatre Centre is none other than celebrated director Atom Egoyan. But who will it be…Atom or Ryan?

Derek Young, Indie Cinema Co-op’s chair is still coy about whether and in what form Ryan Reynolds could have a presence at this Wednesday’s event. He dropped into our offices earlier this week sporting a KISS FM T-shirt and whistling “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey. Mairs however flatly denies the Ryan Reynolds rumor. She reportedly broke into a nosebleed and migraine when notified of the social media buzz. “I forcibly pushed Beth’s hand on the radio dial off CBC 99.9 and that’s when the bleeding started” admits Young sheepishly.

The mystery and BUZZ around Sudbury’s National Canadian Film Day continues.
