Northern Ontario Microbrew Festival Brings New Tastes to Sudbury

If you fancy yourself something of a beer aficionado always browsing the shelves and menus for new and adventurous brews this is the event for you!  Northern Ontario Microbrew Festival is back for a second year delivering the best and most creative in craft brewing, try every beer Northern Ontario has to offer, under one roof! The event will take place at The Steelworkers’ Union Hall and will also feature Ed sessions including food and beer pairings with local restaurants. Check out our interview for all the details.

Tell us about Northern Ontario Microbrew Festival.

There are three really big highlights of the festival for us.

The first is of course the beer. We’ll have breweries from all over Northern Ontario showcasing their craft, their passion, and the creativity in the brewing industry.

The second is our Ed Session Series. We’d like to promote education not intoxication at this festival. We’ll have a session talking about distilling, one session where local home brewers get a chance to ask attending breweries for tricks of the trade and brewing techniques, and (my fav) a Food / Beer Pairing Series. We’ll be teaming up local restaurants with the breweries to pair a food item to a beer. Attendees obviously get to try all the food and all the beer.

The third big highlight is the Home Brew Competition. Home Brewers throughout the North have been submitting beer samples for this competition. The winner will get the chance to brew their beer on a large scale system here at Stack and not only will the winning brew be unveiled at the festival but everyone will get to try the beer as well.

What breweries can we expect to see at the festival?

Attendees will have the opportunity to sample beer from Outspoken Brewing and Union Jack Brewing from Sault Ste. Marie, Sleeping Giant Brew Co. from Thunder Bay, Lake of the Woods Brewing from Kenora, New Ontario Brewing from North Bay, Split Rail Brewing from Gore Bay, Highlander Brew Co. South River and of course Sudbury’s own Stack Brewing.

We’ll also be welcoming the return of Rheault Distillery from Hearst, ON. They’ll be featuring their Vodka & Whiskey.

We’ll even have some Honorary Northerners like Muskoka Brewery (Bracebridge), Lake of Bays (Baysville), and Sawdust City Brewing (Gravenhurst).
