Maker Monday: Little Pear Boutique

After having a baby of her own and getting inspired by Pinterest, Stephanie started making baby and toddler clothing. She sources most of her products from Canadian suppliers and makes the most adorable dresses, onesies, booties and a bunch of other items!

How did you get started and what is your creative process like?

I’ve actually been sewing since I was about 7 or 8 years old – so over 20 years, but we won’t say exactly how many years. I’ve crafted items in one form or another, but when we had a little baby comes into our lives I made her a keepsake quilt and fell in love with sewing again. It was a quick jump from the quilt to making baby and toddler clothing, thanks to Pinterest, and now here I am.

Where do you find the adorable fabrics you use?

I source almost all of my fabrics (with the exception of a few prints) from Canadian suppliers, most of which are small, work-at-home-mom operations.

What has been your best selling item so far?

My best selling items are dresses with hearts cut out in the back, which go from new-born all the way to girls size 12, followed closely by booties/slippers, which actually go all the way to adult sizes.

Do you do custom orders? What has been one of your favourites so far?

I do a lot of custom orders, but my favourite so far has been for a friend of mine who recently after going through infertility and multiple miscarriages. It was an honour to be asked to create their ‘coming home’ outfit, as I know how much went into having a child of their own.

Do you have any tips for other makers who may be looking to start selling their own pieces of art?

Looking to other shops for inspiration is always a good way to get started, but it’s so important to find your own look and style. I am part of an online community with other sewing business owners, and although we all source our fabrics from the same places, we all have items unique from each other. It’s so interesting to see the different ways people will put their own ‘spin’ on the same fabrics, and find a way to ensure no 2 shops are the same.
