SUDBURY COMMUTER CHALLENGE IS UNDERWAY

SUDBURY COMMUTER CHALLENGE IS UNDERWAY

Its time to step up your environmental game and join reThink Green in the 2019 Sudbury Commuter Challenge! June 2nd – 8th give an eco-friendly mode of transportation a try. Walk, carpool, bike, use transit to your destination or even connect online and stay home (pjs optional). This is a group effort to engage commuters in more sustainable forms of travel and perhaps not so coincidentally coincides with Canadian Environment Week. Here in Sudbury city council just unanimously declared a state of climate emergency on May 29th, what better way to start off this commitment on the right foot! Challenge your friends, colleges and even other workplaces to take part in the challenge and try getting around the eco way! There’s still time to register and do your part by visiting: www.rethinkgreen.ca/communterchallenge.

Walk

Put on some good shoes, connect your headphones with some good tunes and get to steppin! This is the easiest way log some miles if you’re participating in the Commuter Challenge. The Canadian Heart and Stoke Foundation recommends adults get in 150mins of exercise per week, that adds up pretty quick. So not only is walking to work a great way to get your heart pumping in the morning, you’re also logging minutes and long-term health benefits without even noticing!

Carpool

Check if you have a co-worker who lives in the same neighbourhood or on the way. You’re going the same way so you may as well go together! By driving to your destination with a friend, coworker, or neighbour you’re immediately cutting your greenhouse gas emissions in half! Not to mention you can make it a regular thing and save on your expenses too. Win – win.

Bike

This is easily the most eco-friendly whip you can get and its all powered by you! On bike you don’t have to worry about being stuck in traffic, just take a trail and avoid it all together. Check out www.rainbowroutes.com to see if they have any trails in your area to make your commute a little more adventurous. Biking to work means you don’t have to pay for gas which in turn means you can spend that money on things that are way more fun than fossil fuels.

Take Transit

On average one city bus could replace as many as 45 vehicles on the road! Vehicles are responsible for a huge portion of greenhouse gases and also contribute to an endless host of health problems. Imagine what a difference it would make if more people took advantage of public transportation! Use the free time to enjoy the ride, savour your morning coffee, read the paper or listen to your pump up playlist to set yourself up for a great day.

Telecommute

Aka work from home. No we’re certainly not condoning playing hooky from work, but you know that long and tedious task you’ve been putting off? The one that needs your complete focus, or that you’ve been working on and just needs to be fine tuned. Wouldn’t it be nice to work on it in the comfort of your own home? If its an option for you give it a try, save on emissions by not going anywhere at all.

The Sudbury Commuter Challenge runs June 2nd – 8th. You still have time to register to participate as an individual, team or challenge your colleges by visiting www.rethinkgreen.ca/communterchallenge. Take part in a challenge that could change your commute!
