SUDBURY STORYTELLERS WITH GSPL: TERRY LYNN JOHNSON

SUDBURY STORYTELLERS WITH GSPL: TERRY LYNN JOHNSON

Knowing we have many writers in our local area, we wanted to start a feature to highlight some of them to bring their work to a broader audience. The Greater Sudbury Public Library comes across some of these writers on a regular basis and we are continuously introduced to new writers and new books to add to our shelves. Are you a local writer? Let us know and we can feature you in an upcoming month, shoot us an email at jessica.watts@greatersudbury.ca!

Who are you and how long have you been writing?

I’m Terry Lynn Johnson, I live near Whitefish Falls and I have worked as a Conservation Officer for the past 17 years. Before that I was a dog musher with 18 sled dogs. I started writing for dog and adventure magazines in 2009, and then I branched out to writing novels for young readers.

What are your books called and where can people find them?

I have several books out with my publisher, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. Ice Dogs, an upper middle grade survival story with dogsledding; Falcon Wild, an upper middle grade survival story with falconry; Sled Dog School, a middle grade novel about math and dogsledding; and a Survivor Diaries Series for reluctant readers with four books all featuring smart kids using their own resourcefulness to survive realistic situations. You can get these at any bookstore, local libraries or online.

How would you describe one of your books?

Survivor Diaries: Avalanche! is my latest release, it came out in January 2018. It’s the second in the Survivor Diaries series, for reluctant readers, but each book features different characters so they don’t have to be read in order. I love this one because it has a female protagonist with grit. After a skiing trip goes wrong, she has to figure out how to keep herself, and her twin brother, alive. It also features wolverines, which are about the coolest animal in the kingdom. It earned a Starred Review from Kirkus.

Where can people find you online?

I have a website at www.terrylynnjohnson.com that features my books, a blog and lots of other fun things to check out.

Jessica Watts is the Coordinator of Outreach, Programs and Partnerships at the Greater Sudbury Public Library. Her job usually involves the parts of the public library that people don't associate with libraries like snowshoes, theatre passes and special events. She loves talking about books, especially over a caramel latte at Salute, and is always in the middle of reading 2 or 3 books at a time.. or, more honestly, 4 or 5!
