Eats & Asana with Selina Rose

Selina Rose is a Holistic Nutritionist, yoga teacher and recently published her first cookbook, Everyday Eats. We spoke with Selina to find out more about her 7-week nutrition and yoga course called Eats & Asana and the process of publishing her first cookbook.

Tell us a bit about what you do.

I’m a holistic nutritionist and yoga teacher who helps ambitious professionals align their health goals with their life goals so they can be resilient to stress and have the stamina they need to live the life they desire.

I do this through my 7-week nutrition and yoga course called Eats & Asana. This course runs several times per year and combines the fundamentals of holistic nutrition and yoga to teach participants how to eat well, connect with their bodies and improve their relationship with food.

I also offer personalized individual coaching programs that are tailored to specific clients’ needs. I work one on one with my clients to improve their diet, live a healthier lifestyle and support their bodies with nutrition and supplements.

Basically, I help people figure out what they need to do to feel better and I coach them through the steps of implementing those things in their life. We all know we need to drink more water and eat our vegetables, but for some reason we struggle to make that happen—the coaching aspect of my job is what enables me to help people overcome their own hurdles.

How did you know you wanted to turn your passion into a business?

Looking back, I think I always knew I wanted to work for myself, it just took me a while to figure out what industry that would be in. My passion for health was ignited when I experienced my own health challenges – I suffered with digestive issues for years without being able to identify the cause. In discovering yoga and holistic health practices my world opened up to so many possibilities for health and healing. I knew at that point that I wanted to share this with other people so I studied Holistic Nutrition and Health Coaching. Everything I learned in school fueled my passion even more. I knew at that point it was my mission to share the possibilities available through holistic health with others.

Your recently launched your own cookbook- Everyday Eats – Tell us more about this process.

Creating the Everyday Eats Cookbook really began 4.5 years ago when I started my business. I’ve created and tested recipes over the last several years with my clients and have compiled a strong list of favourites. I always knew I wanted to publish a cookbook, but 2017 was the first year I had team members who could help me put it together. With the help of a designer, and photographers I was able to pull the book together and launch in December 2017! It was a lot of late nights and early mornings to pull it off, but I’m so proud of the finished product. Everyday Eats has been very well received and I’ve heard excellent reviews from people making my recipes in their homes!

What kind of recipes can we find in your cookbook?

The premise of the Everyday Eats Cookbook is whole-food recipes that are ready in 30 minutes or less. As the subtitle states, these are uncomplicated recipes for time-starved healthy eaters. So many of my clients and friends have busy schedules and don’t spend a lot of time in the kitchen. I wanted to give them a resource that would inspire them to cook healthy meals on a daily basis, and dispel the myth that healthy food needs to take a long time to prepare.

The book includes over 40 whole-food recipes. There is a mix of vegetarian/vegan recipes as well as those including meat. You’ll find breakfast ideas, snacks, dips and dressings, soups, mains, and of course dessert! All the recipes are gluten free, most are dairy-free, and they’re all labeled according to allergens, and prep time.

What has been a highlight of your career so far?

Launching the Everyday Eats Cookbook and being invited to share it on CTV Morning Live in Ottawa was an awesome experience. I have highlights and proud moments all the time (for example, each time a group graduates from my Eats & Asana course), but that was an awesome experience.

Do you have any tips for anyone who is thinking about starting their own business?

My advice for someone looking to start their own business would be to get started. If there’s a product you make, or work you love to do, start offering it to the world. When you build up experience, and a list of satisfied customers it will give you the confidence to take the next steps to put your business structure in place. Stay connected to your passion and commit yourself to consistently delivering value to your prospects and customers.

I’d also recommend hiring a coach, or enlisting the help of a mentor who can help you forecast and anticipate the road ahead so you can be prepared for your next steps. Having someone on your side who has been where you are will be so valuable for your business and for you personally. Entrepreneurship is not for the faint of heart, there are many times you’ll need a shoulder to cry on or a cheerleader to tell you to keep going. If running your own business is really what you want you’ll find a way to thrive in the ups and downs.
