10 Times I Fell in Love with George Stroumboulopoulos in 2015

February can be a tough time of year for the citizens of Singledom. A time to reflect on yet another year of poor dating choices, ill suited matches, romantic blunders and encounters that fall under the category of “other”. Rather than wallow in pity I chose to reflect on a year in the life of a significant other that never lets me down – Mr. George Stroumboulopoulos.

The affair began in my first year of college, back when his CBC talk show The Hour, actually was a full hour long. I remembered seeing him on Much Music in my public school days, but now here was a socially engaged and more mature version of that spikey haired VJ. As I finished University I helped organized a day trip to CBC studios in Toronto to attend a taping of The Hour. “This will finally be my chance!” I thought, only for an accident to turn us around and our clandestine meeting to be post-poned. Β When we finally did meet it was in the most unexpected of ways – my sister was volunteering at the Polaris Music Prize at which he was presenting. Knowing of my long standing crush she approached him, he offered to facetime an unsuspecting me who was “chilling with no make up on” (and not in the cute Drake kind of way) and watching netflix in bed. Needless to say our first meeting wasn’t the love at first sight I had anticipated but alas I still have hope. Until then here are 10 reasons to love Strombo.

1. When he loved his mom and I knew my mom would love him.

2. That one time he winked and I basically melted.

3. When he wore a purple suit and proved there is no suit colour he can’t wear.

Case and point: this green suit.

4. When he stood on the shore and I couldn’t decided if it was him or the view that was taking my breath away.

5. All the times he posed with babies and my ovaries cried.

6. Or when he posed with dogs and I dreamed they were ours.

7. When he was patriotic.

(sometimes still with dogs)

8. When he made even this whip look cool.

9. When he posed with a hockey trophy while drinking a Molson and few things were more Canadian.

10. When he was a bad boy biker like the ones your mom always warned you about.

(but with a heart of gold)

In conclusion if you find yourself alone with a bottle of wine, eating junk food and lamenting your tragic love life this Valentine’s season remember there’s always one guy who won’t let you down. My boyfriend, your boyfriend – Canada’s boyfriend, George Stroumboulopoulos.

  1. After seeing a movie in Toronto a few years ago I was waiting for my friend at the bottom of the theatre when the dude next to me dropped his keys on my foot. I picked them up and gave them to him: it was Strombo.
