Christina Best- Sudbury’s Own National Champ

Christina Best- Sudbury’s Own National Champ

Christina Best is a modern martial artist, a mother and a mentor. Don’t let these photos fool you; she is a badass, but she’s also one of the friendliest people around.

Christina trains out of Melbrook Martial Arts Academy, where she can be found almost every day, either smashing Thai pads, the heavy bag, or as acting instructor during Women’s only classes. Recently, Christina has been very busy, with fighting in the featured bout of Northern Fights (a local amateur promotion), followed by winning the National Championship for WAKO in her weight division.

We sat down with Christina to talk about what it’s like to bring the belt home to Sudbury as well as what it’s like balancing motherhood and martial arts!

What’s it like to be national champ?

It’s an incredible feeling, everything I’ve been working towards is coming together and paying off. It feels kind of awesome to say, “Hey, I’m the champ now.”

Where do you want the sport to take you?

Really, I just want to go with the flow. I train and fight because I love it, and it brings me a lot of joy, so I’ll take whatever happens. If I end up going pro and getting paid to do what I love that would be great, but for now I don’t mind punching and getting punched for free!

What’s it like being a mother and fighter?

It’s really tough, I’m not going to lie. Meal prep saves me most days, it’s definitely a balancing act. But on the other hand she also practices Muay Thai, and we basically live at the gym; we only go home to sleep! The biggest struggle is managing our time outside of training and keeping that balance.

What message would you have for those reading this right now?

Do what you love, love what you do, don’t make work everything, but you will have to work for what you want in life.
